This document sets out amendments to guidance previously published in Approved Document G: Sanitation, hot water safety and water efficiency, 2015 edition incorporating the 2016 amendments.

These amendments have been incorporated in the online available Approved Document G. Hard copy versions will need to be read alongside the amendments listed in this document. You should always check the online version to know that you are looking at the most up to date version.

The changes highlighted in this amendment booklet take effect on 1 October 2024 for use in England. The previous edition will continue to apply in relation to building work on a particular building where a building notice, an initial notice or an application for building control approval with full plans, has been given to the relevant authority in respect of that building before the day the new regulations come into force, 1 October 2024, and either the building work to which it relates:

a.has started and is sufficiently progressed before that day; or

b.is started and is sufficiently progressed within the period of six months beginning on that day.

Please note that ‘building notice’, ‘initial notice’ and ‘building control approval application with full plans’ have the meanings given in the Building Regulations 2010. For the purpose of these transitional arrangements, building work is to be regarded as ‘sufficiently progressed’:

a.where the building work consists of the construction of a building, when the pouring of concrete for the permanent placement of the trench, pad or raft foundations has started, or the permanent placement of piling has started;

b.where the building work consists of work to an existing building, when that work has started; or

c.where the building work consists of a material change of use of a building, when work to effect that change of use has started.

G4: Sanitary convenience and washing facilities

Page 29 Replace paragraphs 4.1 to 4.6 inclusive with the following.

4.1Attention is also drawn to the requirements for accessible sanitary conveniences and hand washing facilities of Part M (Access to and use of buildings) of Schedule 1 to the Building Regulations 2010 and to Approved Document M and to the Regulators’ performance specification made under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 (SI 1999/1148 as amended) for WC suites.

4.2The requirement T1 for specific types of toilet accommodation in buildings other than dwellings is in Part T (Toilet accommodation) of Schedule 1 to the Building Regulations 2010. Approved Document T provides guidance on how to meet requirement T1 with the provision of the following types of toilet accommodation:

•Type A – Fully enclosed self-contained ambulant universal toilet

•Type B – Fully enclosed self-contained universal toilet

•Type C – Ambulant single-sex toilet cubicle (not self-contained)

•Type D – Single-sex toilet cubicle (not self-contained)

4.3Requirement for ventilation is in Part F (Ventilation) of Schedule 1 to the Building Regulations 2010. Guidance on ventilation of sanitary accommodation is given in Approved Document F

4.4The number, type and siting of sanitary conveniences, including separate provision for men and women, for staff in workplaces are also subject to the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992. Attention is drawn to the Approved Code of Practice issued with respect to those Regulations. Requirement T1 sets a requirement for the provision of specific facilities that should be provided in addition to requirements for general sanitary provision under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992.

4.5Further guidance on washbasins associated with sanitary conveniences may be found in the Food Standards Agency’s Code of Practice _Food hygiene – a guide for businesses_.

4.6Guidance on the selection, installation and maintenance of sanitary appliances including composting toilets may be found in BS 6465-3.

4.7Where hot and cold taps are provided on a sanitary appliance, the hot tap should be on the left.

4.12Guidance on the provision of activity space around sanitary appliances is given in BS 6465-2.

4.15Further guidance on the provision of sanitary conveniences can be found in BS 6465-1. This may be used for those building types not set out in paragraph 4.13 above or for those workplaces where the applicant wishes to provide more than the minimum recommended in the Approved Code of Practice, for example, to deliver equivalent provision for men and women. Approved Document T provides guidance on the arrangement of sanitary appliances to meet requirement T1.

Replace paragraph 4.15 with the following.

4.16A sanitary convenience may be provided in:

a.a self-contained room which also contains hand washing facilities;

b.in a cubicle with shared hand washing facilities located in a room containing a number of cubicles; or

c.in a self-contained room with hand washing facilities provided in an adjacent room.

Replace paragraph 4.18 with the following.

4.19Guidance on the provision of activity space around sanitary appliances is given in BS 6465-2.

5.8The number of fixed baths or showers and washbasins in buildings with rooms for residential purposes should be in accordance with BS 6465-1.
